INTRODUCTION
The competencies for lifelong learning as defined by the European Union play an important role in all educational levels and subject areas. Bilingual education is no exception. In this course, participants will explore ways to help learners develop four competences: digital; linguistic; plurilingual and mathematical, science, technology and engineering (STEM).
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify opportunities for developing these three competencies in class.
- Guide learners to develop key competence-based skills and attitudes.
- Analyse the language relevant to each competence, and provide scaffolding.
- Design an activity to develop each competence for their learners.
METHODOLOGY
The course prioritizes active engagement through discussion and group sharing. Participants examine competencies from two perspectives: theoretical and practical. They discuss guidelines from relevant research. They analyse video, print and online examples of how competencies can be taught at primary and secondary levels, comparing and evaluating them. Participants apply their insights by designing one activity to develop each competence. Feedback is designed to enhance the activities and facilitate self-evaluation.
CONTENT & SCHEDULE
Session 1: digital competence. Guiding learners to access reliable content, and present information with digital tools.
Session 2: linguistic and plurilingual competence. Helping learners gain deeper understanding of the multimodal texts typical of bilingual subject areas. Supporting learners to use that understanding to communicate content multimodally.
Session 3: STEM competence. Encouraging learners to apply the scientific method in and out of school to answer questions, carry out experiments, and summarise results multimodally.
FACILITATOR BIODATA
Michele C. Guerrini, PhD. is dedicated to teaching and developing educational materials. She teaches in the Masters in English as a Foreign Language offered by the University of Alcalá (Madrid). Through her company, MCG Content and Language Network, she collaborates with educational publishers to produce CLIL materials for subjects such as Natural Science, Geography, and History for learners from primary through secondary. Her research on pre-primary CLIL appears in A. Otto and B. Cortina-Pérez (Eds.) Handbook of CLIL in Pre-primary Education (Springer, 2023). She is the Reviews editor for TESOL SPAIN, a national teacher’s organization, publishing monthly online reviews throughout the academic year.

La realización de esta actividad formativa contribuye al desarrollo y mejora de la Competencia Digital Docente, ya que en ella se abordan las siguientes competencias de su marco de referencia:

CERTIFICACIÓN
